Hello Everyone,
Over the past 22 years, I have dedicated myself to the education of all children, continuously striving to enhance my teaching practices regardless of my role. Currently, I am privileged to teach French, History, and Geography to grades 6-8 students at OJCS.
In my role, I focus on two main areas in French instruction: aligning with the Ontario National Curriculum and preparing students for the DELF exam. I am pleased to share that since my arrival at OJCS, I advocated for and received substantial support from Ms. Gordon and Dr. Mitzmacher to acquire essential resources for introducing these national and international programs. Their unwavering commitment and investment in books and learning materials for our intermediate levels have significantly enriched our educational offerings.
As a certified DELF trainer and examiner, I collaborated closely with the Centre Culturel Français d’Ottawa to coordinate and oversee the DELF exams at our school. I am thrilled to report that all our grade 8 students achieved 100% success in the DELF exam for the second consecutive year. This accomplishment validates their French language proficiency and enhances their academic and professional portfolios, opening doors to opportunities in 160 countries where DELF certification is recognized.
The DELF exam evaluates students’ abilities across listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French, providing them with official recognition that lasts a lifetime. This certification is crucial for future educational and career pursuits, often being a requirement for admission to francophone postsecondary institutions and recognized by employers globally.
I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all our grade 8 Extended French students for their outstanding achievement in the DELF A2 exam of 2024. Your dedication and hard work have not only brought you personal success but have also contributed significantly to our school’s academic excellence.
Warm regards,
Wanda Canaan

Dear Parents and Caregivers:
We are starting a new unit called Une question d,équité ! In this unit, students will explore the question “How can we make things more equitable in the world?”
They will read short biography about people who have fought for equity in the world. Furthermore, they will read a variety of texts on equity, among other, a new paper chronicle, a personal recount, a new article, a script of a play and a tale. You are invited to be part of our unit in a variety of ways.
For example:
At the end of the unit, students will show what they have learned by creating a prize or a trophy to honor someone who has fought for justice and equity in the world.
They will use reading, writing, oral, and media skills and strategies to complete the task.
You can support the learning goals for this unit at home by discussing the unit topic, as well as the unit skills and strategies presented in this unit.
Sincerely,
Wanda Canaan
